The central government has officially denied taking any final decision on a proposal that would place Chandigarh under the President’s direct authority. The Union Home Ministry’s statement aims to quell the political controversy that erupted in Punjab following reports of a potential administrative overhaul for the Union Territory. It was confirmed that no bill will be presented in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament concerning this issue. The Ministry clarified that the proposal, currently under review, is focused on simplifying the legal framework for Chandigarh and does not involve altering its governance or its historical connections with Punjab and Haryana. They emphasized a commitment to extensive stakeholder consultations before any definitive step is taken, ensuring Chandigarh’s interests are protected. The government urged against unnecessary concern, highlighting its intention to resolve the matter judiciously.
