The race for New York City’s next mayor has drawn the attention of former President Donald Trump, who has issued a strong warning to voters about Zohran Mamdani. Trump took to social media to denounce Mamdani, a democratic socialist, as a “Communist” and pledged to limit federal financial support to New York City if Mamdani secures the mayoral seat.
The presidential intervention comes as the election approaches its climax on November 4. Trump’s declaration on Truth Social indicated his intention to withhold federal funds, stating, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required.” He foresees “complete and total disaster” for the city under Mamdani’s governance.
Trump also voiced his belief that “New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win,” questioning the viability of communist principles in governing a major metropolis. In a surprising turn, he urged New Yorkers to cast their votes for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, despite their strained history, positioning Cuomo as a preferable choice to Mamdani.
Zohran Mamdani, 34, is a New York State Assembly member who immigrated from Uganda as a child. He is a prominent figure in the progressive movement and currently appears to be leading the mayoral race according to recent reports.
Mamdani’s campaign responded to Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo with a sarcastic social media jab, highlighting the political drama unfolding as Election Day nears. The potential impact of federal funding adds another layer of significance to this closely watched contest.
