Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar of India convened with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today amidst the ASEAN summit. The bilateral talks focused on deepening the robust India-US partnership and addressing significant regional and global challenges. Minister Jaishankar shared his positive impressions of the meeting on social media, stating his satisfaction with the comprehensive discussion on bilateral cooperation and international affairs.
The meeting comes at a time when US foreign policy engagements are under scrutiny. Secretary Rubio had previously addressed apprehensions that renewed US strategic ties with Pakistan could potentially sideline India. He firmly stated that such engagements would not detract from the strong and enduring bond between the US and India, emphasizing the distinct nature of these relationships.
Rubio elaborated on the US’s global strategy, explaining that maintaining diplomatic ties with multiple countries is a fundamental aspect of its foreign policy. He described the US’s increased engagement with Pakistan as an opportunity to foster strategic cooperation on matters of common interest. He also lauded India’s diplomatic maturity, noting its skillful management of relationships with various countries, which reflects a pragmatic and seasoned approach to foreign policy.
Concurrently, the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit provided a platform for India and Southeast Asian nations to bolster their partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the summit virtually, outlined priority areas for collaboration, including counter-terrorism strategies, maritime security initiatives, and the prompt reassessment of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement. He underscored the imperative of collective action against terrorism.
