The Indian cricket team’s decision to omit wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the first ODI against Australia in Perth has drawn sharp criticism from R Ashwin. India succumbed to a seven-wicket defeat in a rain-affected match, managing only 136/9 in 26 overs. Ashwin found the team composition, which included three fast bowlers and three all-rounders (Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy), puzzling. He articulated his disagreement on his YouTube channel, stating that while batting depth is considered, the bowling attack’s effectiveness seems to have been overlooked. Ashwin argued that on large Australian grounds, Kuldeep’s attacking variations and ability to extract bounce from the pitch make him a crucial asset. “If Kuldeep can’t bowl with a lot of freedom, then where will he play?” Ashwin questioned, highlighting the contradiction in selecting a team that doesn’t maximize its bowling potential. He further added that if the intention is to lengthen the batting, the batters themselves must step up. The inclusion of Harshit Rana at number 9, a position typically reserved for a bowler, further underscored Ashwin’s point about prioritizing batting over specialist bowling. India will need to find answers to these selection dilemmas before the second ODI in Adelaide.
