The film *They Call Him OG* is a setback for Pawan Kalyan, failing to deliver a commercially successful venture. The film’s violence and lack of narrative direction undermine its impact. Sujith’s direction falls short, and the characters are primarily negative. The absence of song-and-dance numbers is a divergence from typical Telugu cinema. Kalyan’s performance is constrained by the film’s narrative limitations. His character, a modern samurai, is set on avenging an attack on a monastery, confronting the antagonist Omi, played by Emraan Hashmi. The face-offs between Kalyan and Hashmi lack substance, and the action sequences are poorly conceived. Sujith’s direction highlights Kalyan at the expense of a cohesive storyline. Several scenes, including moments of intended intensity, come across as unintentionally comedic. The film’s editing struggles to manage the chaotic footage. The effort to elevate a simple revenge plot with an overbearing score and cinematography does not succeed in engaging the audience. The film abandons conventional Telugu cinematic elements. However, the final product is ultimately repetitive and predictable.
