The shift from reliance on foreign imports to domestic manufacturing has been dramatic. Strong government policies, including the ‘Make in India’ initiative and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, have played pivotal roles in attracting investments and boosting domestic production. The PLI scheme specifically incentivized electronics companies, leading to the establishment of numerous manufacturing facilities across the country. Companies like Apple and Samsung have established manufacturing bases in India.
This has led to a significant increase in mobile phone production and exports. India has evolved from a market dependent on imports to one that exports mobile phones globally. Official figures highlight a remarkable increase in the number of mobile manufacturing factories and a corresponding growth in exports.
Moreover, the expansion of mobile phone manufacturing has created substantial employment opportunities. The value of mobile phone manufacturing has grown substantially, creating approximately 1.2 million new job opportunities in India over the past decade. The data shows tremendous growth from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24.
