BJP’s Electoral Map: Successes, Alliances, and States Yet to Conquer

The BJP’s political landscape has evolved dramatically under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2014, the party’s reach was limited; however, the BJP’s presence has grown substantially, with 20 states and 2 union territories currently under its governance. The BJP alone governs in 12 states and one union territory. The party governs in alliance with other parties in seven states. As of today, there are still five states where the BJP does not hold power: West Bengal, Punjab, Kerala, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Modi’s rise has coincided with the BJP’s growth. The party’s governance expanded from 6 states in 2014 to 18 states under the NDA in 2019 and 20 states under the NDA in 2024. The BJP government in Delhi, a union territory, marked a significant win in 2025 after a 27-year gap. The states where the BJP has independent rule include Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Delhi. The NDA alliance governs in Maharashtra, Goa, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Assam, and Puducherry. The states where the BJP or NDA have yet to form a government include Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Jammu-Kashmir.
