Police have arrested a mother and son in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, for allegedly deceiving a jeweler. The pair used a fake gold bracelet to obtain a genuine gold chain, resulting in a financial loss for the jeweler. The gold chain that was fraudulently obtained was valued at 1.68 lakh rupees. The arrested individuals have been identified as Savita Singh, also known as Sapna or Sappo, aged 43, and her son Ishant Verma, also known as Anuj, aged 23. Both are residents of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The incident occurred at Dhadiwal Jewelers in Sadar Bazar, within the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station. The suspects visited the store on September 9th and presented a fake gold bracelet, claiming they wanted it repaired. When the jeweler informed them that repair wasn’t possible, they requested an exchange for a gold chain. The jeweler, trusting them, provided a gold chain weighing 13.880 grams, with a value of 1.68 lakh rupees. They then left the store with the chain.
Once the suspects departed, the jeweler inspected the bracelet and discovered it was a counterfeit, leading to the realization of the fraud. The jeweler immediately filed a complaint with the police.
The police took swift action and launched an investigation. The Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit, along with the Kotwali police, worked together, examining CCTV footage. The footage helped in identifying the suspects and their vehicle, which led to their arrest.
During the interrogation, the suspects confessed to a similar incident at Ajay Jewelers in Bilaspur’s Sadar Bazar, where they exchanged a fake bracelet for real gold prior to the Raipur incident.
