Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most prominent spinners, is reportedly in discussions to join the Big Bash League (BBL), potentially becoming the first Indian cricketer to play in the league. While official confirmation is pending, several indications suggest the 38-year-old veteran is considering the move for the upcoming season. This development marks a potential shift in Indian cricket, which has historically limited its players’ participation in overseas franchise leagues. Ashwin’s retirement from all international formats and his IPL exit have cleared the way. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has expressed significant interest in Ashwin’s potential involvement, highlighting his value to the BBL. Ashwin’s illustrious career, including 287 international matches and numerous match-winning performances, demonstrates his readiness for new challenges. He is also in talks to join The Hundred (2026 season) and ILT20. His strategic approach and ability to adapt to various playing conditions are assets that would be beneficial to the BBL. With his eligibility and Cricket Australia’s interest, the chances of Ashwin joining the BBL are favorable, which could open doors for future Indian cricketers.
