West Singhbhum, a tribal district in Jharkhand, is facing a serious health challenge, with a significant percentage of children experiencing stunted growth. According to recent data, nearly 60% of children under the age of five in West Singhbhum are affected by dwarfism. This places the district second in the nation for this alarming statistic. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development presented a report to Parliament that revealed 63 districts across India have stunting rates exceeding 50% among children. Nandurbar district in Maharashtra has the highest rate of stunting. Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district also features prominently in the report.

The report was presented in response to parliamentary questions on July 25, with details provided by the Minister of State, Savitri Thakur. The data, collected from the Anganwadi and Poshan Tracker platforms, encompassing over 73 million children, revealed widespread issues related to child health and development. The data also indicates that malnutrition, inadequate healthcare, and socioeconomic disparities may be contributing factors. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving child health outcomes in affected areas, with Uttar Pradesh facing a particularly challenging situation in numerous districts.
