Himachal Pradesh Government Opposes Mass Tree Felling, Will Petition Supreme Court

Himachal Pradesh’s government intends to file a petition in the Supreme Court to challenge the extensive tree felling occurring in the state’s apple-growing region, as per a directive from the High Court. Minister Jagat Singh Negi has voiced strong concerns regarding the environmental impact of removing established trees from encroached forest lands. He highlighted that the cutting of fruit-bearing trees is particularly problematic and inconsistent with conservation efforts. The government aims to prevent the unnecessary destruction of the green cover, especially considering the vulnerability of the region to monsoons and related natural disasters. Negi emphasized that the government is adhering to the High Court’s orders for removing encroachments but opposes the large-scale removal of trees. He also provided updates on the progress of restoration work, including the reopening of roads and the restoration of power and water supplies, following recent damage from heavy rainfall and landslides. An investigation into the death of a pilgrim and the alleged exploitation of tourists has also been initiated.
