The Sariya market in the Giridih district is bustling with activity as local residents sell wild mushrooms harvested from the surrounding forests. The region’s forests, rich with trees like sal and palash, witness a surge in mushroom growth during the monsoon. These ‘khukhdi’ mushrooms are a culinary favorite, known for their taste and nutritional value, leading to strong demand. The local community capitalizes on this by collecting the mushrooms and selling them in the Sariya market at attractive prices. Income from mushroom sales offers financial benefit to the rural community, with earnings of ₹1000-₹2000 per day. Health professionals highlight the nutritional value of the mushrooms, with medical officer Dr. Lalan Kumar noting that they are a rich source of protein, vitamins, calcium, and iron, while also aiding digestion and promoting heart health. However, it is important to exercise caution as some varieties may be poisonous.
