Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods, and the latest victim is BJP MLA Kushwaha Shashibhushan Mehta. The fraud began with the criminals posing as GST customs officers, enticing the MLA to participate in an auction of seized vehicles, including a Fortuner. They provided images of the car, valued at ₹12.70 lakh, via WhatsApp and requested 10% of the price, amounting to ₹1.27 lakh, as a down payment. After receiving the money and providing a fake receipt, the scammers vanished. The MLA has filed a complaint with the cybercrime police. This incident follows an earlier attempt to defraud IAS officer Manjunath Bhajantri. Simultaneously, Ranchi’s cyber police arrested Vijay Prakash from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, for orchestrating a YouTube-based investment scam that defrauded victims of ₹23.95 lakh. Prakash used deceptive advertisements to lure people into WhatsApp groups and later defrauded them with promises of high returns.
