In Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh, the Radha-Krishna temple, nestled within the Kamal Vilas Palace, has opened its doors to the public after five decades. This temple once served as a spiritual haven for the rulers of the Khairagarh kingdom. Now, both the temple and the historic Darbar Hall are accessible to all. Dr. Lovely Sharma, the Vice-Chancellor of Indira Kala Sangeet University, played a pivotal role in reviving this historical site. The palace, originally the residence of the Khairagarh King, was donated to establish the Indira Kala Sangeet University. The temple, with its striking idols of Lord Krishna and Radha, holds a unique place in the kingdom’s history. Kings would seek solace and guidance here, believing the idols would answer their prayers. The temple had been closed to the public for approximately 50 years after a theft, and the Darbar Hall had been shut for 15 years. Dr. Sharma, upon taking office at the university, recognized the importance of these historical structures and initiated their reopening. She emphasized the value of this heritage for the entire community. The Vice-Chancellor recounted the unparalleled experience of visiting the temple and praying there, and shared the information from the royal family that the idols ‘talk’. The Kamal Vilas Palace, now the Indira Kala Sangeet University, stands as a testament to history. The reopening provides an opportunity for devotees, students, and tourists alike to experience the royal legacy. Local expert Bhagwat Sharan Singh highlighted the rich history of Khairagarh. The university’s decision to reopen the temple is highly commendable.
