Road safety is getting a boost as the government plans to make ABS mandatory on all two-wheelers sold in India starting January 2026. This initiative responds to the rising number of accidents and fatalities. The government’s directive will necessitate that all dealerships equip new two-wheelers with ABS and provide two BIS-certified helmets for each vehicle. While the move is generally welcomed, it will lead to an increase in the cost of vehicles, especially for models below 125cc and entry-level bikes. It’s expected that the price of some models will increase by ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 due to the additional ABS hardware, including front disc brakes and single-channel ABS. The Ministry of Transport will soon issue guidelines to facilitate the implementation of these regulations.
