The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is considering the construction of an elevated corridor on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), similar to the Dwarka Expressway. The aim is to improve the commuting experience between Delhi and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by eliminating traffic signals and city congestion. This year, the authority assigned a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for the renovation of the SPR, specifically the 5.5-km stretch from Vatika Chowk to NH-8. The design has been submitted.

The proposed elevated corridor will be a six-lane structure with ramps for easy access. It will connect the Dwarka Expressway and NH-8 through the existing cloverleaf intersection and also link to the Sohna Highway (part of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk. This design aims to ensure a smooth flow of traffic from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-8 and then to NH-248A. It will also benefit those traveling towards Delhi from the Sohna Highway. The project, originally conceived in 2019, was temporarily put on hold.

In 2022, an initial proposal was made to construct eight flyovers and expand the SPR to six lanes, but it was scrapped due to low traffic. Later, the then-Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed the GMDA to modify the design for a direct elevated road connecting NH-248A to NH-8 and the Dwarka Expressway. This current project received the green light from Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini in July 2024. The GMDA board has approved Rs 750 crore for the project, with funds allocated for construction and land acquisition. Local residents have voiced the urgent need for SPR’s redevelopment.
