Eight-Day Police Custody for Sonam Raghuvanshi and Associates in Murder Case

Shillong: The investigation into the death of Raja Raghuvanshi has taken a crucial turn with the court granting eight-day police custody to Sonam Raghuvanshi and four other individuals implicated in the case. Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor, the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and SP (City) of East Khasi Hills, verified the court’s decision. The suspects, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Singh Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand, were later escorted to the Shillong Sadar Police Station. The case concerns the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge near Sohra, close to Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, on June 2. Raja and his wife, Sonam, were on their honeymoon in the region in May 2025 and had been reported missing earlier. Following the body’s discovery, Sonam was located near a roadside dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway. Govind, Sonam’s brother, has voiced his strong conviction in her guilt and called for stringent punishment. He has also emphasized that his family has distanced itself from Sonam and has apologized to Raja’s family. Raja’s sister-in-law, Kiran Raghuvanshi, revealed that Sonam frequently used two mobile phones. The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, indicated that evidence suggests Sonam’s involvement, but further interrogation is needed to confirm the details fully.
