    Amit Shah: The 27th meeting of the proposed Eastern Region Interstate Council has been postponed in Ranchi on 10 May. The meeting was to be held under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. For this, he was about to reach Ranchi on 9 May.

    Official sources have not given the reason for the postponement of the meeting, but it is believed that the decision has been taken in view of the ongoing conflict and tension situation between India and Pakistan. The members of the council have been informed about the meeting to the four states. The new date of the meeting will be decided later. (Amit Shah)

    Apart from the Chief Ministers of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha, top officials from the four states were to arrive to participate in this meeting. The government declared him a state guest. Several issues were to be discussed in the meeting including interstate coordination, subject related subjects, extremism eradication, distribution of assets, control over drug trade.

    It is noteworthy that under the State Reorganization Act, 1956 passed by Parliament, the country was divided into five regions North, Central, Eastern, Western and Southern and a Regional Council was formed for each region. It is a legal body, whose ex -officio president is the Home Minister of the country.

    The Chief Minister of the states included in the Regional Council fulfills the obligation as the vice -president for a period of one year based on rotation. Currently, the Vice President of the Eastern Regional Council is Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. (Amit Shah)

    This council plays an important role in exchange of ideas and experiences between the Center and the states and cooperation. This council also has the responsibility of developing mutual cooperation between states for successful and acute execution of development projects and resolving border disputes, issues related to inter-state transport.
