The US Supreme Court has rejected the emergency petition of suspected Tahwwur Rana of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Rana in his petition had argued against extradition in India that he would be tortured there due to Muslim and Pakistani origin. With this decision, the process of extradition of India’s India has now become smooth.

Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen Tawwur Rana is accused of helping Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists plan and carry out the Mumbai attack. 166 people were killed in this attack, including six American citizens. Rana has been convicted of working closely with her childhood friend and chief conspirator, David Coleman Headley. Headley is currently serving a 35 -year sentence in the US. US President Donald Trump announced last month that his administration approved Rana’s India extradition, so that he could face a trial in India for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attack.

Tahwwur Rana presented a “Emergency adjournment petition” before the Associate Justice of the ninth circuit of America. In the petition, Rana argued that his extradition in India would violate American laws and the United Nations anti -atrocities agreement, as it is sufficient to believe that he may face torture when extradited in India.

Rana has said that the extradition of his India should be banned till the settlement of the pending trial on the merits and demerits submitted on February 13. The petition mentions that the probability of torture in the case is more and the petitioner is under serious danger, as he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin and is accused of involvement in the Mumbai attack. Additionally, the petition also states that keeping in view the serious health status of the petitioner, extraditing him to Indian custody centers would be like a “really” death sentence for him.

The application mentions the medical record of July 2024, in which it is clarified that he is suffering from many serious and life -threatening diseases and health problems. These include heart disease, Parkinson disease, increased meat indicating bladder cancer, kidney disease and asthma. Apart from this, he has also become a victim of Kovid-19 infection several times.

Trump announced during PM Modi’s US visit

At the time of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in February, President Donald Trump announced that Tahavvur Rana has been allowed to extradite India. Now he will have to face trial in India. The Trump administration took this decision when the Supreme Court rejected Rana’s petition. However, after this, Tehwavur Rana filed a new petition in the court.

NIA filed a charge sheet in 2011

In 2011, the NIA presented a charge sheet against 9 persons including Tahwwur Rana, in which he was accused of planning and implementing 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the context of Tahwwur Rana, ‘We have seen Kasab. What is special in this? We will definitely keep it in Maharashtra.
