Raipur, February 4, 2025 / The Cancer Department (Radiation Oncology) of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College, Raipur, has achieved a significant milestone on National Cancer Day. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Medical Education-1), Government of India, has instructed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to grant approval for 03 seats for the super-specialization course (M.Ch.) in Surgical Oncology at Raipur Medical College. This will allow this important course to commence from this academic year.

A New Dimension to Cancer Treatment in the State

It is noteworthy that the Cancer Department of the Medical College already operates 6 recognized seats for M.D. (Radiotherapy). After the approval of the super-specialization course in Surgical Oncology, cancer patients in the state will now receive better medical facilities.

Raipur Medical College Becomes the First Government Medical Institute in Central India to Offer this Specialized Course

The Dean of the College, Dr. Vivek Chaudhary, and Professor of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, stated that Raipur Medical College is the first government medical institute in central India to start this specialized course. Dr. Arvind Nerle, Chairman of the NMC Cell of the college, informed that an application for this course was submitted last year, but due to some deficiencies, the NMC did not issue the LOP (Letter of Permission). The college administration addressed these deficiencies and appealed for reconsideration twice. Recently, as per the NMC’s instructions, Professor Dr. Ashutosh Gupta of the Surgical Oncology Department was sent to New Delhi, where the staff, infrastructure, equipment, clinical facilities, and available resources were reviewed. After a satisfactory evaluation, the NMC granted approval for the M.Ch. course.

    Improved Facilities for Cancer Patients

With the commencement of the M.Ch. Surgical Oncology course:
✔ Cancer patients will receive advanced surgical facilities.
✔ The state will get super-specialists in surgical oncology.
✔ Postgraduate medical students will get excellent opportunities for higher education and research.

This significant achievement will provide state-of-the-art treatment facilities to cancer patients in Chhattisgarh, and Raipur Medical College will emerge as a leading center in cancer treatment and research.
