Raipur, January 25, 2025 / Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai has congratulated and extended best wishes to Shri Pandi Ram Mandavi, a tribal artist from Narayanpur district, on his selection for the Padma Shri Award. This prestigious award will be conferred upon him for his significant contribution in the field of traditional instrument making and wood craftsmanship.
Shri Pandi Ram Mandavi, who is 68 years old, belongs to the Gond Muria tribe. For the past five decades, he has not only preserved Bastar’s cultural heritage but also given it a new identity. He is particularly known for making the Bastar bamboo flute, called ‘Sulur’. In addition, he has taken his art to a global level through embossed paintings, sculptures, and other handicrafts on wooden panels.
Shri Pandi Ram Mandavi learned this art from his ancestors at the tender age of 12 and, through his dedication and skill, has taken Chhattisgarh’s art and culture to new heights. As a cultural ambassador, he has showcased his art in more than 8 countries. He has also trained more than a thousand artisans through his workshop, ensuring the continuation of this tradition for future generations.
