Gandhi Jayanti: Studying Gandhian principles in Bapu’s school for 79 years, getting ‘shelter’ at Bapu’s house

In Kasturba village, girl students are getting education from Anganwadi till eighth standard. Apart from bookish knowledge, girl students are also taught the intricacies of agricultural work. Here destitute women and girls are also getting shelter in Ba’s house.

Indore, which witnessed important moments of independence from the Holkar dynasty, has been holding on to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi for the last 79 years. Even today, the youth of this city are not only weaving cotton yarn in Bapu’s basic school, but are also writing a new story through computer, mobile and internet.

This change is taking place in Kasturba village near Ralamandal in Indore. In 1944, Mahatma Gandhi established a trust for the development of women, girls and children in the memory of his wife Kasturba. This center was started in Indore in 1945 and since then till today, this center is not only passing on Gandhi’s principles to the future generation, but is also introducing them to new dimensions of science and the world.

Here, in Bapu’s basic school, girl students living in rural areas are getting education from Anganwadi to eighth standard. Apart from bookish knowledge, the girl students are also being taught the intricacies of agricultural work through Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Animal husbandry is also taught in the Gaushala. At the same time, destitute women and girls are also getting shelter in ‘Ba Ke Ghar’. The girl students are also learning organic farming in Amrit Bagh here.

More than 400 students are getting education

More than 100 girls are studying in classes 8th to 12th in the Kanya Vidya Mandir operated in Kasturba village. At the same time, in the Autonomous Girls College, Kasturba Gram Rural Institute, 300 girl students are studying in graduate courses of BA, B.Sc., B.Com, Home Science and post-graduate courses in Rural Development and Extension, Sociology. Many girl students studied in the institution have reached high positions.
