Virendra Gahawai, Bilaspur. The Chhattisgarh High Court has taken cognizance of the case of misbehavior with girl students by the District Education Officer (DEO) of Rajnandgaon and the threat of sending them to jail. During the hearing of the case, the division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice BD Guru expressed strong displeasure over the behavior of the DEO and called it indecent and condemnable.
The incident took place on 4 September 2024, when the girl students went to meet the DEO demanding the appointment of teachers. On this, the DEO threatened them and said that they would go to jail. This incident happened a day before Teachers’ Day, when the girl students were only demanding the appointment of teachers in their school. The behavior of the DEO in response to this legitimate demand of the girl students was widely covered in the print and electronic media.
The High Court took up the matter as a public interest litigation and has scheduled the next hearing of the case on September 12. The court has issued notices to the School Education Secretary, Director School Education, Collector Rajnandgaon and DEO and sought their response. The court has also asked the government what steps have been taken to appoint teachers in schools where there is a shortage of teachers.
