Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam actor and Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) chief Mohanlal resigned from his post on Tuesday. According to reports, the actor-led body has been dissolved following his resignation.
Shocked by the explosive findings of the Justice K. Hema committee on harassment and abuse of women professionals, the Malayalam cinema industry on Sunday witnessed two high-profile resignations related to such issues, including that of director Ranjith, who resigned from the post of chairman of a government-run film academy.
While political pressure was mounting against Ranjith, actor Siddique resigned from the post of general secretary of AMMA, amid demands for his resignation from within his own community.
Renowned filmmaker Ranjit had come under fire after a Bengali female actor accused him of misbehaviour several years ago, but the issue came to the limelight after the Hema Committee report was made public. Apart from this, a female actor had levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Siddiqui on August 24.
The report of the Justice Hema Committee, constituted by the Kerala government after the attack on the actress in 2017, has revealed cases of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry, following which action has been demanded against the culprits.
