Chandrayaan-3's landing site will now be officially called 'Shiv Shakti Point', IAU approved, PM Modi had announced

New Delhi. Last year in 2023, on July 14, Chandrayaan-3 was launched from Sriharikota. After its successful landing on August 23, PM Modi had told the landing point of Vikram Lander that the landing point of Chandrayaan-3 will be called 'Shiv Shakti' point. After PM Modi's announcement, now the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has officially approved this name.

The Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which gives detailed information about the names of planets by the IAU, states, “The IAU Working Group on Nomenclature of Planetary Systems has named the station for the landing site of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander as 'Shiv Shakti'. Permission has been granted.” The announcement defined the origin of the name as, “The landing site of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander. A compound word from Indian mythology, reflecting the masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) duality of nature

It is noteworthy that on August 28, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at ISRO that the landing point of Chandrayaan-3 mission will be known as “Shiv Shakti Bindu”. The place of Chandrayaan-2's landing failure will be called “Tiranga Bindu” and the day of Vikram Lander's touchdown on the Moon (23 August) will be celebrated as “National Space Day” in the country.
